Why Smarter Starter Fluid?
Better Tasting Food
Whether you buy the most expensive cut of meat or ground beef, traditional lighter fluid and matchlight charcoal can ruin the taste. They’re wrought with petrochemicals that leave residual hydrocarbons on your food. Don’t eat fuel!
Unlike traditional lighter fluids, Smarter Starter Fluid burns off without the odor of petrochemicals. Yes, these are the same chemicals that come out of your tailpipe. Not too appetizing, huh?
Simply shake, squirt, and ignite. Smarter Starter Fluid is the fastest way to light your grill! Keep the convenience of lighter fluid without compromising taste! Perfect for when you need a hot fire fast.
Award Winning Quality
Smarter Starter Fluid was awarded the “Editor’s Pick” at the 2009 Natural Products Expo East. This award is a testament to the professional chemical development and real-world trial and error that went into making Smarter Starter Fluid the highest quality lighter fluid on the market today!
Safer Storage & Handling
Smarter Starter Fluid’s ultra-low toxicity formula makes it safer to use, store, and handle. It burns smooth with no dangerous flare ups.
The Leading Alternative
Smarter Starter Fluid is simply the best choice for lighting your charcoal grill. Metal chimney starters can be a burn hazard. Gels can be slow and ineffective. Electric probe starters need to be plugged-in and can be inconvenient. Make grilling easy. Grill smarter!

Did you realize that when you taste fuel on your flame-cooked food it means you are eating petrochemical compounds! Smarter Starter Fluid, LLC contracted EMSL Analytical, Inc. to conduct Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of a major brand name petrochemical lighter fluid as well as test food cooked that had used the fluid to ignite the fire. In parallel, EMSL also tested Smarter Starter Fluid. The results of the testing concluded definitively that food cooked by fire ignited by the petrochemical lighter fluid contained residual petrochemical compounds. These petrochemical compounds include: Nonane, Diethylcyclopentane, Decane, Methyl-Cylcohexane, Undecane and Dodecane. In contrast, EMSL found that there were very small amounts of residual natural compounds left on food cooked on charcoal ignited with Smarter Starter Fluid.
According to the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of a major brand name petrochemical lighter fluid, kerosene is listed as the primary ingredient. Kerosene based lighter fluid can be harmful to humans and animals if ingested and/or aspirated. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), during a 10 year period from 1997 to 2006 there have been 35,621 poison exposures of the sub-category “lighter fluid / naphtha” in the United States. Among those exposures, 18,433 involved children less than 6 years of age and 10,724 individuals were treated in a health care facility. 10 deaths resulted from these poisoning exposures. In a separate poison exposure category detailed by the AAPCC for “kerosene” it is revealed that there were 22,239 poison exposures from 1997 to 2006. Of these 11,930 involved children under the age of 6 with 6,750 individuals treated at a health care facility. 4 deaths resulted from these poisoning exposures. According to the AAPCC survey classifications, “Lighter Fluid / Naphtha” and “Kerosene” sub-categories fall under the general category of “Hydrocarbons”. Other common hydrocarbons include: benzene, diesel fuel, gasoline, motor oil, turpentine and others. In all, hydrocarbons were responsible for 585,685 poisoning exposures in the 10-year period from 1997 to 2006. 217,401 of these exposures were among children under 6 years of age and 131,358 required treatment in a health care facility. 129 deaths have been reported from hydrocarbon poisoning in the previously mentioned time period. A product like Smarter Starter Fluid is one step toward displacing toxic chemicals off of our shelves.
